back away from the scissors.

i cut my own hair. sometimes if i want to get fancy, i’ll have eve do it, but usually i can do a pretty good job of it by myself because i have very fine, sorta wavy hair. but it’s dangerous to be your own very indecisive hairdresser. there’s been a couple times i’ve woken up hungover and on top of it, very oddly shorn. in june i went from my long natural almost black hair to a short ashy blonde bob. i did the blonde myself too with drugstore brands. i figured, why spend $150 when i could spend $10?

yesterday I was watching bad music videos and I sorta lost my mind for a second, grabbed the scissors and started snipping away. i guess this time i was thinking, what better time to reinvent oneself after having moved to another country? i wanted to be a bit edgier (ick, i hate that word) and decided to go assymetrical and messy…

before manic snipping session:

after manic snipping session:

i guess it worked all right cuz now everyone wants to mess with it all the time.

  2. I can not do anything with my hair. I admire people that can ! I wish I could straighten my hair with the new Brazilian method….

  3. That looks fab! The furthest I go is cutting my own fringe, and even then it always ends up being a little dodgy and uneven - not good as it’s meant to be a heavy blunt affair. Very impressive job.

  4. I’m impressed…I can barely brush my own hair.

  5. How cool is it that not only do you cut your own hair but you can style it too (I often lop off my knotty-ass ends but I can’t be said to style it at all.) It looks awesome.

  6. Thank you very so much for all your information!

  7. Yes, i liked it a lot, Amelianne. But make sure you only try it if you’re hair is naturally black. There’s a huge difference between bleaching your natural hair and trying to remove layers and layers of black dye. don’t even think about attempting that without a hairdresser!

but yes, if you’re hair is naturally black, Born Blonde / Maxi Blonde is pretty powerful stuff and should get you pretty light in a couple of tries. after that if you want to go more ashy/platinum, try the Clairol Light Ash Blonde #818 (don’t leave it in very long at all, your hair gets very porous by this point!) and buy some shampoo and conditioner with violet/blue pigments in them to keep it that way. any beauty supply store should have them.

    good luck!

  8. Oh my! Such a cute cut. You must be so brave!
I am right now a black headed gal but would like to be blonde!
Were you satisfied with the Clariol Born Blonde product?

  10. adorable, as usual. i get that way sometimes too- but then my hairdresser usually scolds me. you’re so lucky you can go blonde with a drugstore dye. when i had pink streaks in my hair, it took forever to get it to pale blonde and was a bitch to maintain.
anywho… i love it. good job, you freaking amateur!

  15. fabulous! how does home hairdessing always end up looking fiercer than when you pay a ton to a proffessional! :)

  16. Well done! Mine always ends up in a huge disaster. Seriously that looks professional…

  17. Wow, I do the same thing–and have, in the past, achieved the same look (though mine was very, very deep red. :)) I love that look and it is great for get up and go. I miss it. Now I have longer hair and my kids desperately want me to grow it long again. Sigh.

Either way it is a great look and I am all for doing your own hair cuts (though sometimes I end up with much shorter than I planned and recently I went to a hair dresser for the first time in 8 years and LOVED what she did–of course she was sporting exactly the same cut so that worked pretty well. :))

  18. Jealous! Because 1. sounds like you have the same hair type as Kirsten Dunst, and she always looks so adorably tousled, 2. You’ve achieved the perfect shade of blonde that I can never get with drugstore brands and looks terrible on me anyway, and 3. you do a great job of cutting your own hair!
