Yay! We have another guest-blogger today! It’s the uber-hip Heather from the very addicting Tango Pirates and Absinthe! Mad props! We love her cheeky writing style and impeccable taste in clothing and music. Here she is, in all her stylish glory.
Film is a great place to go for fashion inspiration in my book. So many actresses coined iconic looks–take Diane Keaton in Annie Hall, or Gwyneth Paltrow in the Royal Tenenbaums (maybe that’s just me though.) Even Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz gets a nod sometimes!
However, inspiration struck me the other day upon viewing another iconic film, Mike Nichol’s 1967 adaptation of a post-collegiate’s first novel… can you guess?

So the Graduate was a well-written, well-acted, Oscar-winning legend–if we can all just put Rumor Has It out of our minds. But what really stole the show for me was Katharine Ross, who played Elaine. There is something about her style that strikes me as everything that was good about the 60s, with a lot of suprisingly modern elements. She took the fresh-faced All-American-Girl-of-the-60s look and ran with it, with her crisp white coats, miniskirts, and lovely big Bardot hair.

Check out her oversized sweater here, with white skinny jeans and roomy bag. If I’m correct, she’s also wearing some great riding boots in this scene, my obsession this winter.

I also have a thing for period wedding dresses… I’d lose the veil and wear something like that to a formal holiday party if such things really existed!
How to apply to everyday life:

Top, American Apparel

Dress, Forever 21

Coat, Urban Outfitters

boots, Frye
Who’s your unexpected movie style icon?

I enjoyed the fashion translation and I must say that Diane Keaton is one of my favorite movie stars of all time. I like her conservative, quirky sense of style – -it seems to work well for her.
Oh, film is one of my favorite places to glean inspiration. I think I tend to lean toward a strange mix of Sophia Coppola and John Waters in sartorial aesthetic. Ha. But I must say, though I myself don’t execute it on a daily basis, the Annie Hall look is one that I admire.
i realized last night that my unlikely style icons are the ladies from ‘ferris bueller’s day off.’ sloane petersen (mia sara) and ferris’s little sister jeanie (jennifer grey) have some rockin’ outfits! i especially love sloane’s white leather fringed jacket. i couldn’t find any pictures of their outfits online, but pay attention to them when you watch the movie sometime. jeanie’s got the idea with high-waisted pants!
I love this site!!
The coat is devine and the blue top as well
Ill be back..
I love Brian Slade (played by Jonathan Rhys Myers) in Velvet Goldmine. That glam rock look is so sexy and androgynous.
Here’s a more complete list of movies that have influenced my style:

Check out the mom, Mary, in E.T., played by Dee Wallace. Especially her ‘work’ outfit: Blouse, skirt, boots,.. want them all.
yes, she was so fabulously chic.
i love your blog.
if you like the graduate, maybe you will like the save-the-date video for my friend’s wedding: http://joannagoddard.blogspot.com/2007/03/best-wedding-video-ever.html
isn’t it amazing?!
I love Liza Minnelli (in the younger days), Winona Ryder, and Madonna’s style from Desperately Seeking Susan.
In the summer I was big on Baby’s style in Dirty Dancing – all those high-waisted skirts and shorts, cute blouses, and fresh white Keds. I need some new inspiration for fall/winter, though…
Props to the costume designers for creating the wardrobes and the “looks” for movie stars!
Ruth Morley for Diane Keaton’s Annie Hall
Karen Patch for Gwyneth’s Margo
Adrian for Wizard of Oz…..and the countless unnamed assistants!
My faves are:
Milena Canonero for A Clockwork Orange, Out of Africa, Darjeeling Limited….more !
Michael Kaplan, Charles Knode & Jean Giraud for Blade Runner
Colleen Atwood for Chicago, Edward Scissorhands, Memoirs of a Geisha, and many many more…
all of which google can provide immense detail about these talented people
