I don't delegate my life in such a manner and don't want people around me ... Being safe and happy in your own skin means exactly what it sounds like it means you should be happy with your lot and not worry about what other people think.

Im so glad to hear someone not plus sized come up with actual suggestions and they are great! You could not have posted a better response unless you took her shopping yourself.
Im a size 4x and 5'6 1/2 (also with the chesty issues-minimizer bras are good!)and I have a few cents to throw in, hopefully i wont offend too many people*
Question? Do you 11-14 girls really not get the selection other girls get?
Because on my end of the spectrum it seems I'd would be in heaven to be a size 12 these are always the sizes I find wherever I go,(but I cant shop vintage so I havn't looked there)! (I should just email you every time I see something in your size and snatch it up!)and well it just seems wrong to put you in that category (height challenges not withstanding).
You ladies are normal to me, while I'm certain you don't get out in neon spandex just as much as I don't, you don't seem to be made to feel abnormal or fat with jokes and mean words(I would hope)which confuses me.
That being said from what I see you kind of get pushed to one end or the other, so if you are working the plus size fashion world then rock it! But don't believe for one minute that you are anything but normal; we all at any size have flaws we find in ourselves and the fashion world functions in numbers, amount of material costs, and what model makes the clothes look good not really how the girl is made to look(have you seen their faces and some of the crazy stuff they have to try to pull off on the runway!?).
I guess what I'm getting at is if a post pops up plus-size I was hoping for something for a big girl not a regular girl :( I did however think most of her tips translated well:)and maybe look forward to more encompassing plus size posts(Pretty please!).
PS their are all sorts of books about dressing flattering, though as a plus size or Normal girl (anything over a 10 really; usually) hit up amazon.com or Barnes and Noble so you can get a better idea of what to keep an eye out for as you browse, bringing a digital camera with you to see how your choices look on film can give another perspective( i walked around in a white fitted hoodie i looooved last Halloween and someone had a video camera and it was an anti-flattering picture- i had no torso just boobs and a head)and don't be afraid to bargain shop sales or coupons if they allow it! got some right fit jeans at fashion bug for $13 last week, were originally $30+!)
Anywhoosle, I hope I helped more than hindered and was able to share my point of view, good luck ladies!***

What a great post! Especially that last paragraph!

I just found your site the other day and now I'm reading backwards. With advice like you give, you're my kind of style site!

I too am a larger sized gal (12), and used to come away from thrift stores (and all other stores for that matter) a bit soured. That is until I changed my ideas about what I could and couldn't wear. The problem for me seemed to lie in the fact that everything that was my size in the thrift shops looked balloony and shapeless. I didn't even want to try anything on. Once I got over myself, I discovered how with a well placed belt, any shapeless dress/skirt/tunic shapes up nicely, and I'm able to play up the parts of my body that I do love.

I don't want to be too forward, but I also co-created a vintage shop on etsy (goodwiu.etsy.com) where I model many a vintage wonder that suit larger body types. Even if you don't plan to purchase a thing, it may be worth stopping by to check out some of the shapes that work particularly well on me - and how that aforementioned belt pulls it all together.

By the by, this is a great topic, and I'm pleased to see it being explored further. My next plan of action? Find a pair of high waisted jeans that I'm happy with - thanks for the other comments lending suggestions about that area!
