I’m currently wearing almost this same outfit, but monikulus did it precisely 73% better. But I can tell you first hand that I feel chic and comfy simultaneously (which only happens about 56% of the time).

I just bought a ticket to New Orleans! My first time there. I’ll be staying in the French Quarter toward the end of the month. Any Louisianian readers who can enlighten me on where the hip kids shop/hang out? Muchly appreciated!

Check out the French Market- very cool. Also any little shops around the French Market tend to be local or thrift stores. Even better is the growing amount of kitschy novelty shops- kinda dumb at first glance, but upon further investigation GREAT for cute jewelry.

  • You have GOT to go to funky monkey on magazine street for all THE best vintage finds. Awesome, awesome shop! My boyfriend evacuated to Birmingham b/c of Katrina(where we both live now)and when we go back to visit, that’s one of the shops we hit first. Love it! Oh, and go have a beer at Molly’s to avoid the tourists. Cheers!

Ex-pat New Orleanian (now in DC), I’d suggest Magazine Street for cute clothing, antique, vintage and novelty shops. Also, if you can make a stop at Bloomin Deals on Freret Street. I also second Funky Monkey and suggest you also checkout Trashy Diva in the Quarter. So jealous. Have fun!

  • In my humble opinion, the best vintage in NOLA, hands down (& better than Funky Monkey), is at Retro Active. I wrote a post about it last year at http://fashionforwriters.com/2008/07/22/a-visit-to-retro-active/. Have fun!

  • I loved New Orleans, I lived there for a short time. Great site by the way.

  • Those shoes look like the kind of shoes where you could sneak up on someone and they would never here you.

  • I’m from New Orleans! Definitely go to Magazine Street-an awesome Buy Sell Trade store there is Buffalo Exchange, eat at Juan’s Flying Burrito for cheap creole mexican food, R bar for lounge like feel great drinks and people, The Saint is off of Magazine Street,Thrift City, The Salvation Army and Red white and Blue are amazingly cheap and awesome thrift stores that you must check out. Hope I helped any. Im sure you’ll have fun! There is always something to do, something opened at anytime and someone open for talking to you!

    I love this look.

  • I love NOLA! And no one else has mentioned Frenchmen Street. There’s a club there that I ALWAYS go to called The Spotted Cat. Don’t miss it. It’s a little bar/dive that always has great gypsy jazz bands. If you get the chance, see the Monday/Friday band called The New Orleans Jazz Vipers. Also, the Rock and Bowl is a bowling alley that has live music every night, and none of their equipment has been changed over from the original pieces they put in in the 1950s. Also, if you’re into photo kitsch there’s an Old Timey Photo Booth on Saint Anne’s that is a lot of fun. Pictures and more references to NOLA stuff on my flickr account here: http://flickr.com/photos/glynnis/tags/neworleans/

theres only a few true vintage stores in new orleans.most are clothing exchanges.

for true vintage try retro active for costume jewelry and lili vintage for dresses, both on magazine street.

in the french quarter try paulettes for costumey goods,le garage has a vintage section and if you love pearl snap westerns and beautiful vintage dresses try ragin daisy.

check out frenchman street for live music and one eyed jacks for 80′s nite.

    have fun!

  • probably add about 3-4 minutes in a cold oven
