i do this thing that quite frequently terrifies my boyfriend – it is called, “purchase the age-7-and-under issues of high-fashion magazines.”
he thinks i’m trying to send “signals.” what i’m actually doing is much creepier than that. i’m getting inspired for my (insert upcoming season) “look.” what i have discovered over the years is that when you’re 5′ 5″ on your good days and can’t hold your own in a battle of force with a medium-sized bag of dry dog food, it’s more than likely that proportionally, your go-to category for “what will these clothes look like on me?” rests somewhere around “large toddler.”
if i were to choose a word for this activity, i would choose “realistic.” besides, i personally find the styling in ”vogue angels” editorials to be much more wearable (and therefore inspiring) than a lot of the shoots i would be paging through in the issues geared more towards my (ahem) actual age bracket. (i would like to take a moment to point out that i am not implying that my style hovers anywhere near the “i like dressing up like a babydoll” end of the spectrum. i think it’s actually quite the opposite – the children in these issues are dressed like adorable miniature adults. which is what i am. sans the adorable part.)
my final argument: i think anyone who doesn’t consider pulling off a look like the ones below to be a smashing success is probably a jerk.
(oh, and all of these came from the spring/summer ’07 issue of vogue angels, japan, acquired while still living in the bustling magazine mecca that is nyc… if you (like the current version of me) aren’t living in that magazine wonderland, i highly suggest locking your credit card safely away and checking out magazine cafe…)

I couldn’t agree mote! I do the same!! But I hide the magazines so nobody sees them.
Wait, what?!? there is a child’s version of vogue!?! when did this happen??
I am torn between awe of photography/styling/cuteness and the sadness for the mini-models making the same silly pouty-faces that the grown-ups do.
I don’t ever want to be a grown-up.
maybe i’m weirder…i consistently buy little girl’s dresses at the thrift store and cut off the tight sleeves. i’m 4’11″ and find the babydoll cuts great for my small shoulders and big hips.
Like Callie I was also not aware that there was a Kids Vogue. Ah, but I’m so glad you let me in on it! Very funny writing as always
I love this idea. I definitely would never be able to wear most of the clothes in the regular Vogue since I am 5’3″. And these little girls are dressed very well, even if they looked like adults instead of kids.
If dudes did this they would end up walking around in t-shirts, sneakers, and grass-stained jeans every day…
callie – i’m not sure how regularly this comes out… these are from the s/s 07 issue, and it’s called vogue “angels” (japan).
i was working in a disgustingly hip hair salon in nyc at the time, and we got stacks of strange magazine editions because we did a lot of runway/editorial work. i stole this from the pile, and it started my obsession with children’s fashion, but i haven’t seen another copy of this exact magazine since.
kimberly – i do the same thing! the small-human departments are my FAVORITES at thrift stores. plus i find a lot of hidden vintage in there… i’m assuming because the wild color combos or small vintage cuts lead a less-trained eye to believe the garments are kid’s?
ira – that’s kind of my favorite outfit of all time. and probably why i don’t do a lot of outfit posts
These are great pictures (and I’m such a fan of children’s clothing!), but I also didn’t know there were fashion magazines for kids! How crazy is that?
I think the little girl in the top pic is my new fashion inspiration.
Um, 5’5″ is far from miniature.
Other than that quibble, this is great advice for shorties. I love Kimberly’s idea of getting little girl dresses to use as tops. I used to be able to wear girls’ size t-shirts, but then my bosoms suddenly got bigger last year. *chagrin*
this is fresh kids fashion !!!! luvd it…
The last gal in the picture creates some more ideas about the kid fashion. All the four photos are nice and their dressings in really superb..
