Painfully Hip Roadtrip Contest!

painfullyhiproadtrip

First of all, Diana and I have to hand out big, fat thank you‘s for all the tips and emails we received in response to this trip! We can’t believe what open arms and doors you guys have! We’ve been offered everything from an idyllic New York state hipster commune at the bottom of a waterfall to a lush townhouse all to ourselves to a little piece of heaven inhabited by a major historical vintage clothing collector in Vermont. Oh how we wish we could make it that far! Here is our still-in-the-planning-stage-and-possibly-completely-insane route (it equals around 80 hours of straight driving in only about 2.5 weeks!):

View Painfully Hip Roadtrip in a larger map
(Forgive the map, it keeps breaking on me. Apparently Google Maps can’t handle the PAIN)

Ok so here’s the bit about the contest.

We’re trying to hit the Fort Knox of Vintage. The Motherload of Thriftness.

Give us its address!

We’re thrifting us up some outfits for the photoshoot finale back on the west coast. If we get the best stuff for the best price from your recommended store, you’ll win a gift certificate to the Painfully Hip Design Collective Etsy store and a personalized gift bag of souvenirs (a roadtrip in a package, as Diana described it).

So tantalize us with your tips!

-Comment the name of the store and the city its located in.
-The first person to comment their favorite Thrift Store’s address is the official entry for that store.
-Only one entry per store and 2 stores per person.
-You’re not allowed to be upset with us if we don’t make it to your store, believe us, it will hurt us more than it will hurt you.

Thanks so much for your phenomenal knowledge. We’re getting reeeeeally excited. Diana’s been practice-packing for weeks.

Okay since you guys are going to San Diego, you should definitely just
go a little ways north to Escondido [it's like 30 mins away from SD] because we have a HUGE store called Amvets!
Everyday they have different tags sales & you can always find at least one cool thing to get if not more.
I usually can’t go in there without buying at least 2 outfits :]
    Thanks! :D

TUCSON! No one EVER comes to Tucson! You can pretty much cruise along Speedway and hit up all the shops along there. Don’t go to the Savers though! $8 pants, $6 shirts, and &12 shoes. Yeesh!

  • hey lady,
It looks like tucson and flagstaff were on your schedule but i was hoping you guys might want to stop for lunch in downtown phoenix @ the Paisley Violin. its a small Euro Cafe with amazing, food for your taste buds and body…. and while your there you could stop by our humble vintage shop ;) Butter Toast Boutique, which is conveniently located in Paisley Town… Paisley Town is a new hidden spot in down town phx that we are oh so lucky to be a part of… it consists of The Paisley Violin restaurant, a small urban hair salon, 2 art galleries, Wicked Wear (which is a boutique with hand made clothing, yoga attire, natural soaps etc…), Butter Toast Boutique (our small Vintage Shop) and one more little shop that is a soon to be- with custom painted skate decks, decorated by local artist.

I know you guys have a ton of places to hit up so i def wont take it personally if you cant make it in, but i thought you might enjoy our new hidden spot!

    peace, love and good luck!

  • Woohoo! You fine ladies are coming to Fayetteville. You’re going to love it.

Cheap Thrills. It’s just down the street from my office!

    120 S East Ave
    Fayetteville, AR 72701
    (479) 442-7735

I know you’re already in Sac so you’ll prob not be stopping in the Bay, but if you’ve never been to the Salvation Army in Oakland’s Chinatown … well, you’re missing out.

  • So happy that you ladies are coming through Fayetteville, Arkansas!!

This is just a couple miles down the road, but it’s my favorite thrift store in the area (it gets bonus parts for being shaped like a barrel):

    Northwest Medical Center Thrift
    400 Park St, Springdale, AR

I also noticed that you’re going through my hometown (and favorite thrifting city of all time) – Memphis. You absolutely have to check out the Amvets on Elvis Presley Blvd. There’s a sign out front that claims “world’s largest thrift store” and while it does take hours to go through, I highly doubt it still holds that title.

    Photo of the sign:

http://www.faylib.org/services/cafe.asp. Also, while you’re in Fayetteville, you can stop at the library where I got my start and plug in your laptops. Enjoy the wifi, the delicious cafe mochas at Arsaga’s and wander around. I love that place. They got 2005 Library of the Year. You’ll probably want to be a librarian too by the time you leave… : )

  • I don’t live there anymore, but if you want to change your trip slightly to include a stop in Utah, I must recommend that you hit up the DI (Deseret Industries). They have locations all over the state, but these two are my favorite: 175 W. 1400 N., Logan, UT & 2234 S. Highland Dr., Salt Lake City, UT. However, it looks like they also have locations in Washington, Oregon, California, Idaho, Nevada and Arizona as well. Those I can’t vouch for, but here’s the link: http://www.providentliving.org/location/map/0,12566,2026-1-1,00.html

If either of them happen to be along your route, theres some good stores in Cheyenne Wyoming & Savers in Reno is totally nuts. Have fun!

  • I so wish I could come with you. Sounds like lots of fun. Unfortunately I cannot recommend any stores as I am in the UK

I fully recommend the Clothing Warehouse in Atlanta (420 Moreland Avenue)! It is pretty much amazing (well the one in Greenville is, but I assume the Atlanta one will be even cooler!)

  • Madeline

    In Tulsa, check out-

    Cheap Thrills
    3018 E. 15th Street
    Tulsa, OK

    Silver Screen
    3232 E. 15th St. Tulsa, OK

The best shop- Deco to Disco closed down in February, but it was on the same street.
    Have fun!!! <3

Rag-O-Rama in Atlanta, GA is the bomb. I got my prom dress there for $12. http://tinypic.com/r/ohoj6g/5

    1111 Euclid Avenue NE
    Atlanta, GA 30307

But basically, my entry is the area around the store, called Little 5 Points. It’s kind of like a vintage shopping mall.

Psycho Sisters, The Clothing Warehouse, Stefan’s Vintage Clothing, and lots of other stores are located up and down Euclid and on Moreland Avenue, which intersects Euclid. This area is Little 5 Points. There are also cool stores like Junkman’s Daughter, which has lots of funky stuff, Sevanandra, a vegan supermarket, the Native American Store, a glass shop, a few record shops, and really good restaurants. I think you’ll love it. http://www.l5p.com/

    Atlanta rocks.

  • oops! i guess its Sedona not Flagstaff (aside from tucson) that you are visiting…

phx is still on the way :) and you guys would literally not miss a step on your way if you had time for a bite :) i promise.

  • Since you’re going to be in Atlanta, you should make the short-ish trip down to Rome, GA, to Becky’s Shoes. The place is wall-to-wall packed with shoes, other accessories, and the occasional clothing item, all discounted. They’re discontinued and recalled stuff, mostly, usually for silly reasons. I got a pair of Steve Madden shoes there once for under $20…a friend of mine paid $80 for her pair in Dillards. Silly girl.

For serious, check out this store. And visit Berry College. I’m sure someone will loan you their dorm for the night if you want to stay and explore the campus.

  • if you are coming to NYC anytime soon please let me know…
we’re throwing a fashion event on june 13th and it would be great if you could make it.
more details about that coming very soon!

  • Aw man! As a matter of fact, Diana and I will both be in NY next weekend (15-20) and then off to Chicago (20-25)! Too bad we won’t be able make it to your event…

  • Cecelia

well there’s not really any especially fantastic thrift stores in Memphis, but there is a great new vintage store with reasonable prices called Hi Octane, which is at 2160 Young Avenue.

  • Doubletake or Act Two in Santa Fe! My best friend and I haunted both shops a few years ago. Now that I’m up north in a MI college town it is so impossible to score great thrift finds! Too many college kids getting their sticky fingers on the good loot! Enjoy your road trip!

If you’re going to be in Baton Rouge for more than a split second (it doesn’t have much to offer, I know.), check out Time Warp Boutique, 3001 Government St, Baton Rouge, LA 70806! Oh and their sister store, Honeymoon Bungalow, is right next door and has all sorts of nifty things. :)

  • Jessyca

Outreach Thrift Store in Norman, OK is pretty awesome. A good mix of current and vintage fashion finds!

  • Why Hello There!

I saw that you’re coming to Ga and I know it’s out of the way but Savannah is just bursting at the seams with vintage and antique stores. Check out Civvie’s(new, sorta new, and vintage all in one store), The Paris Market and Brocante(Parisian antique eye candy galore), Clipper Trading (for amazing Asian antiques) are all up and down Broughton Street in Savannah’s Historic District. Also check out Brighter Day grocery store and the Sentient Bean(both next to each other) across from Forsyth Park. ShopScad for handy work by Scad students is also a great place to find one-of-a-kind goodies.
Savannah just in general is amazing within itself.

Happy Trails for you all on this roadtrip!

  • [...] We are headed back home from Chicago (aka 100% pure love) tomorrow where I’m going to attempt to coordinate three Painfully Hip Design Collective photoshoots in the 3.5 weeks we have left before we leave on our epic thrifting roadtrip. [...]

  • Hey! i’m excited you’re going to hit up tucson. agreed about all along speedway, especially goodwill and speedway thrift right next to each other. make sure to hit the back of speedway thrift for the special vintage section. also there are two other places just off speedway, on the SW and NE corners of pima and craycroft. they both look a bit sketchy but they also both have clothes for a dollar! i found an epic silk vintage jumpsuit at the miracle thrift store (they have some good vintage because it’s so packed and no one ever goes there) and the st vincent de paul is a bit more spotty but i’ve also found good stuff there. hope you can get to these stores, they’re all right next to each other.
    have fun!!

  • We were just checking out your route to offer you some hospitality on the way, but it seems like you are heading south from Sacramento and not north to Chico :( Anways, we’re wishing you the very best! :)

  • Trying to get our Chico store’s name right :P

  • Man such a great idea going on a fashion road trip, beats going on the usual holiday. Would love to plan my own vintage trip.
