Last year I discovered that European travel on a budget is not conducive to healthy eating habits. In Reykjavik and Copenhagen, I survived 2 and a half weeks on cheese, bread and salty street food. In the much cheaper Berlin, I got wise to the wide variety of delicious, but not-neccessarily healthy vegan street food (read: deep fried / composed of starch / ordered with extra non-vegan cheese and consumed in excess quantities, in my case), thanks to my vegan host. Needless to say, this resulted in a carnivorous solo orgy towards the end of my stay. In Vilnius, it was all about collaborative meat products, potatoes, and cream sauces (read: meat mush stuffed into a potato and covered in cream sauce). Belgium’s restaurants had a beer selection that could make a monk cry and a menu that consisted of 80% goat cheese. Finally, London forced me to consume mass amounts of overpriced curry, just to stay alive.
Luckily, my preferred form of transit is the only one that’s totally free. I covered miles and miles of cobblestone on foot. Impossible amounts. I pretty much traversed the city of Berlin. So I managed to return stateside with regrets consisting of, but not limited to; my accented beer gut, some afore-unmentioned lithuanian river snails, and having not thought to trade out my ankle boots for some of those new Reebok EasyTones. Then I’d have been toned, svelte and right primed for my annual holiday bulk-up. So, I’ll go ahead and make peace with the brand new pair of cheese thighs and bacon-wrapped butt I’m getting for Christmas. The dessert boobs, however, can please stay for as long as they like.
This year, however, I’m not leaving the weight swings up to chance. I’ll be starting my dream job and moving to Canada in a year, and won’t have the luxury of agreeable weather and/or miles of gothic architecture to keep me fit. I’m hoping if I splurge on a shmancy pair of running shoes with all the features, and a yoga class subscription, I’ll at least attempt to get my money’s worth.
What are your best tips on getting back in shape for the new year? Answer in the comments and win a $100 Visa Gift Card! Contest ends January 16, 2010.

Considering the fact that I seriously need to lose weight, I don’t know how qualified I am to give tips. However, I plan to walk as many places as possible. I even bought a little cart so I can drag large purchases/groceries around.

Get more sleep, cut out about 20% of each meal. Or at least those are my plans for how I will lose weight!
I read somewhere that it takes about 60 days to form or break a habit – so I want to start walking 3 times a week on the beach. No set time or distance – but if I put on the gear and get walking it will hopefully become a habit by March! A good one
whether you need to lose weight or gain some (like me) a food journal seems to help keep track of what you are really eating – it’s easy to miss the small stuff like those couple of crackers you grabbed on the way out and the latte on the way home, but they add up.
I’m loving your blog and the photos. I’m trying to lose weight by walking more, especially right after eating a meal.
My best tip is to be consistent! amy at super healthy kids dot com
My best tip is to stop eating before you feel full and chug at least 8 oz of water before sitting down to the meal. And make sure you chew your food up well.

Two things: I joined a gym that has a “cardio cinema” — a theater with treadmills in place of seats — brilliant!! And I purchased a tiny bikini from Victoria’s Secret as my motivator. I’ll be rockin’ it by May. Here’s my post about it: amartinialwayshelps2.blogspot.com/2011/01/if-only-there-were-gummi-bears.html.

It’s all about calories in, calories out for me. I have ramped up my calories burned and I’m already seeing a difference.
Viva la difference!!
I think making a few small changes is more doable than making one huge one. I’m the type of person who gets very set in her ways, so for me, starting with a few changes like drinking more water during the day and eating more veggies is a lot easier than signing up for a marathon or something like that!
I am resigned to not consuming any sort of corn syrup and I am committed to using my legs for transportation and not a vehicle.
I’m trying to work out at home as well as going to the gym. I always find excuses not to go the gym, but you it hard to find excuses not to hop on the elliptical in front of the tv when you are watching it anyway.

Cut out “white” carbs, i.e. white bread (very hard for me because I love a good french baguette), white rice, white pasta. Also take it easy on the salt and butter. Lastly, clean out your freezer of all the “bad” instant meals (my weakness being White Castle burgers. We don’t have a White Castle here so I hide my obsession in the freezer.) and stock your fridge with fresh veggies and fruit to snack on when hungry. Nuts are good too because they are high in protein which will help with the illusion of fullness. That is all.
Being able to walk on the treadmill for 30 minutes without pain in my foot or feet would be a great accomplishment for me! Yoga helps, too! Thanks!

I plan on eating less and exercising more… simple and easy way to get back on track
I use public transport as much as possible. Public transport means you have to walk to bus stops, train stops, and tram stops from you location.
I also do yoga 5 times a week. That helps.
I have always found that the harder i try to lose weight the more i gain. So my best tip is to be happy with who you are. Focus on being healthy and happy. Eat what you like but do it in moderation. Walk to the kitchen to get it instead of sending the kids. You don’t have to eat the whole tub of ice cream in one sitting. If you choose to eat the whole tub use a smaller spoon so you can get in a little extra arm exercises in lifting that spoon.
=)
I’m very excited to complete my new weight goal, which is 110. I’m currently 124 so I’m not too far. I’m eating healthier and counting calories also I’m working out 5 times a week =) Good luck everyone!

I am eating healthy breakfast not junk!! no more pop tarts!!!
Staying hydrated and working out more regularly.
I have begun pre-season training for my sports team, so that always helps, but I really like spinning and setting myself small goals each week. You can also use a website like dailyburn.com to keep track of everything, compete against other uses, and chat about health related things. Kind of like a healthy version of facebook.
Today, I lugged a 65cm stability ball into my office, and have vowed to use it to replace my desk chair. It took more than 20 minutes to use a handpump to blow the thing up (more calories burned there than I expected) and after sitting on the ball for half the day, I’ve realized that there’s probably nothing better to develop core muscles. In fact, my tummy muscles are already hard at work. (I can tell by the wincing I do when I stand up or sit down.) I don’t ordinarily do resolutions, but this is one I’m going to stick with.
Losing weight? First off all, you need to love and appreciate your body!!Who wants to be a stick figure?! embrace a little jiggle! shake it! Loooooove it!. If you wanna tone it, start stretching while watching tv; yoga or whatever you are comfortable with. Make better snacking choices.(I like nuts and lots of fruit) and WALK! walk everywhere, your legs are cheaper than gas!
