hip replacement implementation a complete success

We were having a time to out-do all others in Chicago, midwestern hospitality is the BEST. Painfully Hip’s Major Hip Replacement Clothing Swap was a ridiculous amount of fun so we’ll have to consider throwing more of these! Thanks to the benevolent help of complete strangers and friends alike, it turned out to be one of the most fun and stress-free parties ever! Mercifully so on account of the fact that we were blatantly hungover and exhausted from the previous night’s festivities; an epic house party thrown by our spectacular hosts.

Anyway, here are a few photos from the swap. I think we’d all agree that we made out like bandits!

The first photo is of the midwestern fashion bloggers that showed up: Michelle of LadyLanguage, Natasha of Whimsical Nerd -who has a great re-cap of the evening up- and Monica of Midwasteland (apparently we’re incredibly short).

and the best swapped outfit of the evening goes to…!
lil higgs
Lil’ Sarah Higgs in a teeny and profoundly adorable vintage dress and fur snow boots. She’s a russian princess about to break out in a carousing, vodka-induced rendition of “I am 16, going on 17” from The Sound of Music.

To everyone who attended: Please send us photos (painfullyhip at gmail dot com) of your favorite swapped outfits and you might win a prize from one of our sponsors! W00t!

We’d really like to thank the following peeps for making everything possible, hangovers included. Sarah for making lists and signs and getting shit done (happy birthday, kiddo!), Pat for your travel services and hospitality, Ira and Andrea for absolutely everything including the epic party and the gorgeous vintage dress that I adore, Billy, Tracy, Molly and your roommates for all your help and use of the awesome and totally perfect (i.e. right in the middle of the vintage shopping district) WoR loft, Michelle of Lady Language for driving so far and bringing your returned wares, taking so many photos and just being generally amazing, Danny for driving and support and logistical execution, Meg for the lovely cocktail party in your painfully hip apartment… and to everyone, thanks for coming! It was so great to meet so many rad chicagoans and to take so many hip duds off your hands.

major hip replacement (and domain transplant)

It’s a Painfully Hip event!
We seem to have a little bit of a “following” in Chicago and since we’ve been planning a trip there to see friends for a while, we thought maybe we’d throw a party! A Naked Lady Party/Clothing Swap!

Its going to be ridiculous! Imagine swapping all the piles of clothes you never wear anyway with the wardrobes of the hippest blog-readers in Chicago! We have a huge Wicker Park loft as a venue (thanks to Tracy and Billy!), there will be spiked punch and some tasty snacks and piles of barely used clothes for the swapping. the world of Painfully Hip

News, news, news….

So it turns out that I’ve had my head so far up my ass this month that I completely spaced on the fact that Painfully Hip had its one year anniversary along with its 400,000th visitor this month! Yay us! I can’t thank you all enough for visiting us and checking out our sponsors and just being generally positive and amazing all the time.

We’ll be in Chicago in a few weeks and are sort of planning a big, but not too big, last minute (head up my ass) Naked Lady Party / Clothing Swap for kids in that area. I can’t make any promises at this point, due to the limited time frame, but right now we’re trying to think of viable (and reasonable) venues for approximately 40-70 in that area so if anyone knows of one, comment s’il vous plait!

To my fellow bloggers… I am running a special on blog mastheads! Now through March 25th, I’m offering the ridiculously low price of $40 for a custom-designed header. You get to specify size, imagery and request unlimited drafts until you’re 100% stoked. Contact me at Painfully Hip Design if you’re interested.

In other news, I’m getting a puppy today! I had to leave my beautiful german shepherd, Malouk with her dad in Vancouver so there’s been a bit of a fuzzy hole in my heart ever since. So I’m off to the SPCA to save a life. Right after I go to the dreaded dentist. Wish me luck!

Thanks again for this awesome year!

painfully painful

hi guys,
i’m really sorry i haven’t been up for posting very much this week, i don’t think i’ve ever been sicker than i am now. it hurts to type! i’ve been in solitary confinement in my bed with the plague, coughing up all types of critters since monday. but i ended up being able to open my eyes enough to watch the entire season of Project Runway Canada. it was really good. Iman was hilariously intimidating as the host. my favorite contestant was Marie-Genevieve, I’m sure you can see why when you see this clip (warning, spoilers):

“MG eez back in zee ‘ouse!!”

enjoy, you guys, I’ll be posting more as soon as I can lift my head.. and I’ll try not to die before then.

prepare yourselves for some stunning mediocrity

I have a sewing machine finally (thanks, Mum)!! My perfect workspace set-up is complete! Any self-respecting graphic designer/fashion-blogger would be happy here:

workspace.jpg

-500 gigs of harddrive space hungry to be filled almost completely with music? check.
-laptop stand which swivels for bedtime movie-watching and working whilst hungover? check.
-ukelele (not pictured) for the systematic slaughter of Beirut songs? check.
-sewing machine for some janky-ass futzing and likely future victim of my wrath? check.

So get yourselves ready for some gleefully awful DIY. I can’t sew worth beans, but that ain’t gonna stop me! Ohmanohmanohman…!

the hippest year yet

woah! big layout change! it’s obviously going to take a bit of tweaking to get this feature-laden new layout where we want it, but the best part about it is MORE room for bigger photos. and if there’s anything we love here at P-Hip its pretty pictures. I’ll also be adding new mastheads over the month which will rotate randomly so every time you visit us it will always feel fresh, like a new pair of panties.

anyway, thanks for your new years wishes over the holidays! we had an amazing time amongst the redwoods and on the beach with great friends and food and beer and weather, it really could not have been better.

brace yourselves because tomorrow we will be featuring our favorite wardrobe remix outfits of 2007 - THE THRIFT STARS OF THE YEAR!

EDIT: SO sorry guys, we’re having PAINFUL issues! please (oh please!) bear with us! we promise we’ll get your thrift stars up soon!!

For your Viewing Pleasure: Haunting Art-Style from Marci Washington

I LOVE these images from Oakland artist Marci Washington (from Fecal Face). The tapestries are hand painted and the dresses are lovely. Forgive me, Marci, but when I first saw these I got that same innocent chill that I felt as an 8 year old watching Scooby Doo. It’s that creepiness and minimalism. But there is no parallel in their faces. I LOVE how she does the teeth and eyes. I want to hire her to design my wallpaper and chandeliers and then create a white gauzy dress for me to float around my house in.

tag, i’m it. and a bag of chips.

we fashion bloggers are a playful bunch. we giggle and spam, chortle and comment, chuckle and trade links. and now we play virtual tag. wednesday i was tagged by Shopalicious and yesterday by PinkRockCandy. so at the risk of being a virtual party pooper, i better choke up 7 extremely boring personal facts about myself. enjoy.

1. i work part time at a sound studio for tv and film. they call vancouver “hollywood north,” but its more of a mecca for bad movies. i’m sure a few great movies have been made here, but besides the Neverending Story, i can’t think of one. it’s a fun job, especially when i get to meet famous people. since i’ve worked here i’ve crossed paths with Jean-Claude Van Damme, Nora Jones, Evangeline Lilly, Pam Grier, Sarah McLaughlan, Jennifer Beal, Peter Greenaway and Douglas Coupland, to name a few. i started here a week or two after Chloe Sevigny came in. my one true regret in life.

2. i get mad crushes on the most random celebs. Brad Pitt? meh. Clooney? blah. in junior high i was completely mad over Robert Sean Leonard who i’m pretty sure is gay. Eve and i later ended up meeting him at an off-broadway venue in NY when we were 17 and i nearly lost my shit. after that it was Tim Roth, a hawk-nosed badass brit who mostly plays creepy assholes. right now my absolute favorite actors are Phillip Seymour Hoffman and John C. Reilly. LOVE THEM. more than anyone else (oh except for Gael Garcia Bernal, i do have a sex drive after all), if they walked into my work, i would probably pee myself. ok, take out the probably and replace it with MOST DEFINITELY. guess i just have a thing for really good acting.

3. including Eve and 2 step-siblings, i have 6 brothers and sisters. needless to say, i know how to pinch my way out of a chokehold, but i will lose in a tickle fight every time. btw, my older sister Summer has an awesome parenting blog! check it out for adorable photos of cute kids doing good deeds!

4. i ain’t afraid of no creepy-crawlies. i love frogs most of all, snakes are wicked, mice are adorable and spiders eat up all those damn mosquitos. when Eve and i were in jr. high, our science teacher got us to scrape the rotting snakeflesh off the bones of a dead 8 foot burmese python. we did it and were paid generously in pizza.

5. yoga is my favorite. i’m lazy as a bump on a toad when it comes to exercise, but i adore a good yoga class. i was always a completely unflexible klutz up until last year, but now i can touch my nose to my knees and do full upward bow like no-buddha’s business. still klutzy though.

upward bow pose

6. i’m a complete music and movie geek. i will watch movies and listen to music all day long if i could. my favorite movie of all time is Magnolia and i’d name off a long list of all my favorite directors if it wouldn’t bore you to tears. i discover new music that i love on an almost a daily basis. right now my iTunes playlist is consisting of a lot of Jeff Tweedy, Grizzly Bear, Chad VanGaalen, Odetta, Otis Redding and Vetiver.

7. i’m pretty good at cutting hair. i cut hair for my friends, my siblings, my parents and myself. it all started when i wanted a pixie cut when i was 15 and no matter where i went, nobody would cut it as short as i wanted. they just kept giving me shorter and shorter bowl cuts. so i took matters into my own hands.

my 7 tagees are: art of the steal, (into) the fray, stylesightings, kingdom of style, life in a venti cup, design toaster and candid cool. you guys rock!
