Special thanks to the lovely Michelle LaJeunesse for letting us visit the stunning Indy on his ranch – He was such a beautiful and well-behaved steed! and to the nice old man who allowed us to trespass on his beautiful property.

As an experiment, the Painfully Hip Design Collective has been tons of fun… I can’t believe how lucky I have been to have such crazy team of talent willing to pitch in to make such beautiful photos. I love it! That said, having a vintage store is a ton of work!! I have a whole new respect for online boutique owners. With my tiny apartment, my graphic design business and lack of superfluous funds, I am realizing that the Collective is going to have to take a backseat unless I can reduce the workload and get more of these of these pretty things into your hands!

Practically every piece in this photoshoot is in perfect condition and for sale! If you have any interest in purchasing an item you see in these photos, please let me know in the comments and I will hook you up! I will put your object of desire up on either the Etsy store or on the amazing vintage auction site, Market Publique and via email, you will be among the first to know about it!

Supa-scores! Things I am in love with this week

I have been on a major vintage-scoring roll lately. Here are my absolute favorite things in my closet to sport this week.

High-waisted leather pin-up shorts (Thunderhorse Vintage, $22) – For SERIOUS. These made of the most soft, thin, buttery leathah ever. I cannot believe my luck. The shape is EXACTLY what I’ve been craving- with the slight flair at the bottom, they breathe well enough that I just might be able to wear them into the depths of summer, and believe me, I will be wearing them every chance I get.

Oversize fish necklace (Thunderhorse Vintage)- I always feel like I’m wearing some kinda whimsical breastplate when I’m wearing this. Makes me think it could stop bullets.
Filigree bird earrings – I just have a filigree fetish. I’ve had the black ones for a while and are consistently my favorite pair, so when I saw these colorful rooster ones for $5.99 on eBay, I just had to own them too (BTW, if you like vintage bird earrings, Penelopepups Vintage has an AWESOME pair here.
Native American necklace – I scored this at a flea market for $10, the dood said he made it with his own two hands. So I guess this doesn’t qualify as vintage, but… SCORE.

Buckle boots – $8 at the flea market. By far the most comfortable and versatile boots I own.

70s deadstock terrycloth dress (Thunderhorse Vintage) – Eek! Sherbet-colored chevron stripes?? Sign me up! This still has tags on it from the 70s, but it just felt wrong to remove them when they’ve been on this long – call me crazy, but I just tuck them in and wear it anyway.

Orange woven wedges (Atelier, $1) – Comfy cozy and sexy as hell.

Of course, this is just the tip of the ‘berg. I have some amazing things in great condition that weren’t my size that I just couldn’t abandon to the unnamed masses. They’ll be up in the Etsy store later this week!

Also, welcome Chicagoans! I was featured on the front page of ChicagoTribune.com via Being Totally Sweet in Chicago today! Thanks, Ira, and CONGRATS!

check me out: Spring – the final countdown

Oh man oh man oh man oh man….

It was SO nice out today. One of those days where you’d feel 100% comfy in either a t-shirt and shorts or jeans and a jacket. Total life-affirming perfection. I almost went tightless, until I realized that my legs had seen less sun than the giant squid. I did end up removing my jacket though. Oh joy, spring is as sprung as a rat trap in a sewer (but if it was so beautiful, why do I keep making analogies to disgusting things, you ask?? Sigh. It is a mystery which will remain unsolved.).

boys blazer, pink dress, ankle boots

ever-present pinstriped blazer – thrifted in the boys’ department, $3
sterling silver green and yellow amber necklace – a very sweet gift I received as thanks for some wedding invites I designed.
pale pink 70s sundress – another very sweet gift from Jen at Thunderhorse Vintage, just for choosing her store for my latest article! I never wear pink, but this peachy mauve was irresistible.
vintage wayfarers – $8 at Thunderhorse Vintage
cableknit tights – $2 target clearance
ankle boots – $14 at GoJane – Hallelujah! These boots filled my craving to a tee. And they’re comfortable too! I promise I will never give GoJane a hard time ever again.
Costa Rica shopping bag – flea market, $2. It has this rad, tribal banana and pineapple print all over it.
fascinator headband – I totally live in this thing, I love it so much! Another very sweet gift from my good friend and guest blogger, Mary Catherine of Little Red Fox. You can buy your very own here!

Golly gee, I’m a lucky girl. Glee!

If you’re in Sacramento, come see preggers Eve and her husband Danny performing (I’m joining in for a Fleet Foxes cover) tonight at the Fox & Goose Pub!

I’ll be camping on a river this weekend so watch for a post from the too adorable Diana. It’s supposed to hit 70 degrees and I couldn’t be more thrilled. It may be time to dance a jig or sing a ditty of some kind. Maybe BOTH AT THE SAME TIME.

    etsy lovin’ : neneee

Valerie King, a prolific designer for her label, Neneee, is a serious contender for my personal style guru. When I discovered her photostream, and then subsequently her ebay and etsy stores, I was flabbergasted. Speechless. Stricken with a case of the “gah’s.”

Fuckit, I’ll just let her photos do the talking.

cropped tweed jacket, monster tee, ripped tights, oxfords, chic haircut
argyle cardigan, plaid high-waisted skirt, tights, ankle boots
    modern flapper dress, gladiator heels
    mini caftan
floral tiered dress, yellow cardigan, ankle boots, geek glasses
    ruffled shirt, tie dye skirt
    tuxedo dress, mismatched tights
    black romper, bubble shorts

Ugh, right??! Painful. Don’t you kinda just wanna kill yourself just a little bit more than yesterday?
    More Neneee after the jump!

    in praise of prep

I’d like to introduce you all to our newest blogger at Painfully Hip, and believe me, we scored big. A renaissance girl of sorts, Mary Catherine is an excellent blogger, amazingly crafty (the handmade hats, headbands and delightfully macabre dolls in her Etsy store will make your credit card shudder), a talented actress (recently employed by 30 Rock, Flight of the Concords and Broadway, baby), and (wait for it!) a Thrift Star of the Day. Too boot, she’s completely fucking adorable, sweet as all get-out, keen as Theodore “Beaver” Cleaver, a great cook, and has a closet I could happily DIE in.
    Thanks Mary Catherine!

    -Amber

It’s actually an odd thing for me to say because I *officially* do not like anything remotely related to anything that is related to preppy-ness. I immediately think pastel izod with turned-up collar/cookie-cutter housewives at a country club/the villain in Karate Kid (and every other 80s movie for that matter)/etc. You get my drift. And so it has been with great gusto that I’ve avoided what I consider to be the polar opposite of my fashion ideal. I treasure imagination, creativity, individuality and uniqueness when it comes to clothes. To me, being preppy concedes the “me” in favor of looking just exactly like a copy of the “we.” No good.

And I have always mentally marked certain labels as preppy and thus, not interesting. (Anne Klein, anyone?) One of these being Burberry. I am not a fashion thoroughbred, so I could be totally wrong on this, but that’s where I always filed it, mentally. Preppy and boring. Could it be that damn plaid? I swear if I see ONE more beige, black, white and red plaid ANYTHING–violence will ensue. It’s the most ubiquitous thing in life right after the movie trailer for “He’s Just Not That Into You.” It’s the cockroach of visuals as far as I’m concerned. It helped only slightly that Kate Moss did the advertisements. Slightly.

So imagine my surprise when I fell head-over-heels in love with this little vintage number…:

    ….and saw it was Burberry…??

(hat: Banana Republic years ago. purse: h&m. gloves: UO clearance. tights: ??. shoes: h&m this year)

I found it in the Etsy shop Arrogant Loves Original, it was very reasonably priced and I’ve worn it 3 times in one week.

To me, this dress is not anti-thetical to all I hold dear in fashion. In fact–it’s pretty great. Should I re-file Burberry?? Or maybe I now like the preppy thing?? Either way, I stand corrected. If this dress be preppy, then so am I :)
