Ask Painfully Hip: Pirate-themed party pointers, please!

Hey there!

First off, I’m one of painfullyhip’s avid readers! Keep up the good job! But in any case, I’m just needing fashion inspirations from the two of you when it comes to a pirate theme party. That perhaps can also involve easy DIYs. And for shoes, what do you think will be appropriate especially if I’m living in a hot sunny weather country? Eg; gladiators/ankleboots? Any ideas? Thanks a whole lot! =D

Love, Lis.

Arrrrrrr-righty then, Lis. I’m assuming you’re looking for Pirate costume suggestions, rather than the Pirate Wench variety? Because frankly? I think the concept of the bosom-laden, voluminous skirt-afflicted Pirate Wench was made up by Disney or Hallmark. Besides, androgyny is HOT.

Ruffled-front poet’s blouse (translation: “puffy shirt” for anyone who was born before 1986): find one at a thrift store. If it’s burning hot, try converting it into a halter blouse by cutting around the collar and over the shoulders, opening up the back.

Fitted vests: worn over ruffled top with fitted trousers, preferably…

Striped trousers, knickers with buttons or harem capris: I’ve seen striped skinny pants at Hot Topic and lots of cute cropped knickers at Target and Walmart… or sew a cinched and buttoned hem onto some cropped pants. Tie a long scarf around your hips to finish it off.

Hair wear: Wear a long scarf tied low around your forehead, trailing down in back, Keith Richards’ style and/or braid some thin leather laces found at a craft/fabric store and then garnish the ends with beads and feathers like this thingy from Urban Outfitters.

Obvious accessories: Hoop earring(s), skull scarf (circa 2006), parrots or anything with feathers or coins. Wear some smudgy black eyeliner concentrated mostly on the bottom lids.

Lastly: Pillage, plunder, rifle, and loot, but unless you actually are Keith Richards who by now probably has the liver of a Body Worlds cadaver, avoid an attempt at drinking an entire bottle of Captain Morgans. Yo ho!

Here’s to You, Ms. Robinson

Yay! We have another guest-blogger today! It’s the uber-hip Heather from the very addicting Tango Pirates and Absinthe! Mad props! We love her cheeky writing style and impeccable taste in clothing and music. Here she is, in all her stylish glory.

Film is a great place to go for fashion inspiration in my book. So many actresses coined iconic looks–take Diane Keaton in Annie Hall, or Gwyneth Paltrow in the Royal Tenenbaums (maybe that’s just me though.) Even Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz gets a nod sometimes!

However, inspiration struck me the other day upon viewing another iconic film, Mike Nichol’s 1967 adaptation of a post-collegiate’s first novel… can you guess?

So the Graduate was a well-written, well-acted, Oscar-winning legend–if we can all just put Rumor Has It out of our minds. But what really stole the show for me was Katharine Ross, who played Elaine. There is something about her style that strikes me as everything that was good about the 60s, with a lot of suprisingly modern elements. She took the fresh-faced All-American-Girl-of-the-60s look and ran with it, with her crisp white coats, miniskirts, and lovely big Bardot hair.

Check out her oversized sweater here, with white skinny jeans and roomy bag. If I’m correct, she’s also wearing some great riding boots in this scene, my obsession this winter.

I also have a thing for period wedding dresses… I’d lose the veil and wear something like that to a formal holiday party if such things really existed!

How to apply to everyday life:

Top, American Apparel

Dress, Forever 21

Buying watches is a huge trouble now since it is hard to decided from the rolex watches, the casio watches or the swiss army watches. For gifts although people still like breitling watches since they are so costly.

the printed scarf, la pièce de résistance

ah. l’amour and the printed scarf…

love and the printed scarf

i’m all about effortless chic. i’m honestly just lazy. i love pieces that i can just throw on at the last minute and at least look like i give a dangdoodle. soft, pretty things make me happy and the lovable printed scarf is yet another easy item (among things like the jacket and the cropped vest) that can add flair, pattern, or a pop of colour to an otherwise basic outfit. it can sometimes even (wait for it…) tie you’re whole look together ( i am so effing hilarious). a gorgeous actress came into my work last week wearing the cutest, easiest outfit: a skinny rock tee, jeans, chucks, a cropped vest and a kerchief around her neck and i seriously got an instant girl crush. that outfit should be her uniform.

i’ve always been a fan of the headscarf, but lately i’m loving the rock-chic neckerchief style, tied with one corner in the front. some messy fringe or an unraveling edge will emphasize your unaffected cool factor. you’re all like, “whatevah, bitches. i can’t help it, i’m just that hip.”

scarves can add interest to almost any outfit and the possibilities are endless…

table runner scarf(here’s our fearless style hero leibemarlene, wearing a crocheted pansy table runner round her disgustingly adorable lil’ neck). you can also wear them as belts, or tied onto the handle of your leather hobo or tote.

the best part of it is, these kinds of scarves (and table runners for that matter) are a dime a dozen in thrift shops. but if you’re having trouble finding just the right one, urban outfitters has a wicked selection from $4.99 up.

floating in the breeze on the côte d’azure

what goes up must come down. and although i think mini-dresses will be sticking around for a while (or at least until the return of that sad sod, jack frost, the sumbitch), long floral halter dresses are just divine, no? what a great way to stay cool even if you haven’t had a chance to get thee to the tannery.

there’s a hell of a lot to be said for leaving something to imagination (it’s funny how in vancouver, the minute the mercury hits 80 degrees, out come the short shorts, headband-sized skirts, tube tops and shirtless men). and there’s something so easy and effortless, yet eye-catching and daring about an ankle-length sundress. you could go straight from the beach and wander into an awards show undetected. and yet, nobody will ever know that you’re completely commando under there. c’mon now, nobody likes sweaty panties.

long green dress

only $29.80 for glamour galore. and no need for jewelry even, the tie at the neck is beaded. i’d wear this with flat strappy leather sandals and maybe a bangle and a cotton tote.

long floral sundress

$29.99 for hippie chic. i’ve been eyeing this dress for a while now. i absolutely adore the print and the colors. and that subtle little ruffle on the bottom makes my wee heart flutter.

long silk floral dress

only $24.99 for gaga gorgeousness! i cannot believe the price on this beauty. and it’s SILK! suddenly you’re a socialite vacationing marrakesh.

PS empty your caches, hipsters! we’ve got a new masthead!
